Bashagha government expresses its rejection of Meloni's visit to Tripoli and his signing of an oil agreement with Dbeibeh’s government

The Libyan government headed by Fathi Bashagha expressed in a statement today, Tuesday, its rejection of the visit scheduled to be made by Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, to the capital, Tripoli, to attend the signing of an oil agreement with the national unity government headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.

In its statement, the Libyan government said that it had received with astonishment the news of the Italian prime minister’s intention to visit the “outgoing government” in the coming days, to attend the signing of the new oil agreement and to conclude a deal between the National Oil Corporation and the Italian company, Eni, to increase the share of the foreign partner and reduce the share of the national partner.

The Libyan government affirmed its rejection of what it called an attempt to revive the “expired government” by involving the Libyans’ livelihood in such deals, deploring what it considered opportunistic behavior by the Italian government that goes beyond the supreme Libyan interests and risks the relationship between the two countries, according to the text of the statement.

The statement stressed the inability of the “expired government” to sign any agreements or memorandums of understanding, and that it was not originally authorized to do so in accordance with the political agreement sponsored by the United Nations even during the period in which it enjoyed legitimacy, stressing that it would resort to the judiciary, calling on all countries to respect the Libyan will represented by In the elected institutions that produced the Libyan government.
