“Funds of Afriqiyah Airways were all in vain”

“After 2011, corruption and administrative divisions have ravaged the majority of state-owned companies,” the head of Afriqiyah Airways branch in the eastern region, Seraj Al-Fitouri, said during a televised interview for Libyan WTV channel and Tabadul Platform.

Al-Fitouri also blamed the presidential Council for the collapse of airlines, among which  Afriqiyah Airways.

Al-Fitouri declared that the funds that were in Benghazi before 2019, (the end date of his mission in the financial administration), were all in vain.

He also denied receiving 50 million dinars, stressing that the company’s accounts, in addition to all account statements at the Libyan Audit Bureau prove that he received nothing.

Gold races to new record

 Gold prices rocketed to a new record high on Wednesday after smashing past $2,000 for the first time, as a weaker dollar and falling returns on U.S. bonds drove investors to hoard the safe-haven metal.

Gold has soared 34% this year and is one of 2020’s best performing assets, with investors buying vast amounts in the hope it will hold its value as the coronavirus pandemic upends markets.

Breaking above $2,000 for the first time on Tuesday and hitting a new high of $2,055.10 an ounce earlier on Wednesday, spot gold was up 1% at $2,037.81 by 12:33 am.

“No end in sight to COVID crisis”

In its statement following the meeting, published on Saturday, it highlighted the “anticipated lengthy duration” of the pandemic, noting “the importance of sustained community, national, regional, and global response efforts.”  

After a full discussion and review of the evidence, the Committee “unanimously agreed” the outbreak still constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). Tedros accepted the advice of the Committee.

The pandemic is a once-in-a-century health crisis, the effects of which will be felt for decades to come”, Tedros told the Committee in his opening remarks on Friday. 

55 irregular migrants arrested in Libya

At least 55 irregular migrants of different nationalities were held on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, said the country’s Interior Ministry on Sunday.

Libyan coast guards raided a warehouse in coastal Zliten city and caught 55 irregular immigrants, including four women and six children, the ministry said in a statement.

It added that irregular migrants were preparing to migrate to Europe through the Mediterranean.

NOC: oil blockade causes losses of more than $7.8 billion

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) reported on Tuesday the total loss of sales opportunities as a direct result of oil installation closures amounts to 7.841 billion dollars, during the 200 days of force majeure.

In a statement, the NOC called for an end to the forced closure of its installations in order for international partners to be able to provide extra support in the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Tajoura: bodies of five migrants recovered off the coast

The Ministry of Interior announced  that the Anti-Smuggling Unit in Tajoura district, Tripoli, has recovered five bodies of irregular immigrants.

The recovery operation was conducted in cooperation with the Ambulance and Emergency Service and in the presence of the Criminal Investigations Department, and the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency.

EU mobilizes €20 million for COVID-19 response in Libya

As part of its global response to the coronavirus pandemic, the European Union has mobilised €20 million to assist the Libyan government in tackling the ongoing crisis.

In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the EU will support the prevention of the spread of the coronavirus, in particular among Libya’s most vulnerable communities affected by conflict, forced displacement and migration.

The €20 million EU assistance will be released immediately and is expected to directly benefit almost 1,000,000 people in Libya. 

This new EU COVID-19 support to Libya is part of a set of assistance programmes under the so-called “EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa” (EUTF Africa).

Total blackout sweeps for the second time through Tripoli and west Libya

The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said a total blackout had hit Tripoli and the western zone which is the second in few hours only.

GECOL appealed to ‘‘citizens’’ not to turn power on for their locality ‘‘by force’’ which it said leads to the total collapse of the electric grid and a blackout.

It also appealed to ‘‘citizens’’ to accept planned power cuts so that what power is generated is shared out to different regions and cities of the country.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Harris visits Benghazi

Chargé d’Affaires Joshua Harris visited Benghazi on Wednesday in order to consult with a range of Libyan officials about achieving a demilitarized solution at Sirte and al-Jufra, enabling the National Oil Corporation (NOC) to resume its vital work nationwide, and seizing the opportunity presented by UN-facilitated dialogue to finalize a lasting ceasefire and roadmap for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries.

In meetings with officials from the House of Representatives and the Libyan National Army, Chargé Harris reiterated that, as the oil blockade is lifted, the Embassy will remain fully engaged to promote the transparent management of oil and gas revenues so that all Libyans can have confidence these vital resources are used wisely for the benefit of the Libyan people.
