10,000 illegal immigrants Rescued Off Libya in 2020

On Monday, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced that a total of 9,839 illegal migrants have been rescued off Libya’s coast in 2020.

In a statement, the IOM said that the rescued included 671 women and 532 children. It noted that 199 migrants had died, and 275 others went missing in the central Mediterranean route this year.

IOM reiterated its call that Libya was not a safe port for migrants, and appealed to the European Union as well as the international community for urgent action to end the return of vulnerable people to Libya.

The international organisation added that an alternative scheme whereby people rescued or intercepted at sea are brought to safe ports must be established urgently. According to IOM, a greater show of solidarity between European States, and frontline Mediterranean states is also needed.

Husni Bey: ” Jamal Al-Kafali is a liar”

During a televised interview for Libyan WTV channel and Tabadul Platform, the Libyan businessman Husni Bey denied what Jamal Al-Kafali said about buying a land at LD 3,700, describing him as a liar.

Husni Bey said that he received a call from Monsef Al-Huntati about a Tunisian company called “Comaprim” which asked for permission to expand a road with the aim of changing the main entrance and invest a land adjacent to another land that it owns in Soukra.

The businessman also confirmed that he had met with Sabri Kshout and another woman to negotiate, either in December 2019 or early in 2020.

While mentioning his previous experiences in Egypt, Tunisia, and the “Gafsa” incident, Husni Bey stressed that he no longer has confidence in investing in Arab countries.

Bey confirmed that he called Malek Baayou to inquire about the accusations against him, demanding either to deny or confirm them as they were issued by the embassy’s office in Tunis, which is an official body,.

Moreover, he called on Baayou to break the silence, stressing that this latter had adopted a policy of procrastination.

Libya’s coronavirus death toll passes 600

1,164 new cases of Coronavirus were registered in Libya, according to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

The NCDC announced in a statement on its official Facebook page that 541 new recoveries had been registered, in addition to 12 deaths due to COVID-19.

This brings the total number of the pandemic cases in Libya to 44,985, including 19,322 active cases, 25,007 recoveries, and 656 deaths.

AGOCO Resumes Work at Sarir Oil field

The head of the management committee of the Arab Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO), Fadlallah Ateitah, announced the restarting of the largest complex in the Sarir Oil field (GC-2). This will allow work to completely resume at the field.

In a statement, the AGOCO pointed out that the matter was achieved thanks to “the efforts of the emerging technical elements, and the national experiences of various technical departments.” It specified that, “They made great efforts, and worked long and continuous hours to overcome the technical problems that hinder the operations.”

Al-Sarraj discusses latest developments in Libya

Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez al-Sarraj held bilateral meetings with the ambassadors of Italy, European Union and Algeria to Libya.

According to Cabinet’s Information and Communication Office, al-Sarraj discussed bilateral relations and the latest developments in Libya with Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Puccini, EU Ambassador José Antonio Sabadell and Algerian Ambassador Abdelkader Hijazi.

He discussed with the Italian ambassador the three tracks for the resolution of the Libyan crisis including “security, economic and political”, as per Berlin Conference conclusions.

In this context, the two sides agreed on the utmost importance of resuming the production and export of oil in all fields and ports, as well as ensuring no blockades will be imposed once again on the sites of output and export.

Also during his meeting with the Algerian diplomat, al-Sarraj stressed the importance of developing joint cooperation to include multiple vital areas.

Passenger terminal to be established at Misrata International Airport

During a meeting at its Tripoli headquarters yesterday, Libya’s Airports Authority (LAA) discussed the implementation mechanism of the project to establish a passenger terminal at Misrata International Airport.

The meeting, which included the local implementing company, also reviewed the designs, and added amendments in line with recent changes in preparation for its final approval.

the meeting discussed the Tripoli based Libyan government’s Decree No. (660) of 2020 regarding approval to amend the contract concluded by the LAA regarding the expansion and modification of the departure terminal at Misrata International Airport to establish an integrated passenger terminal.

Other measures required to be taken by competent authorities to begin implementation, including the Audit Bureau’s approval of the contract amendment and the provision of the necessary financial coverage, were also discussed.

IOM Reports Repatriation of 160 Migrants to Libya

A reported 160 migrants in the night between Sunday and Monday were taken back to Libya by coast guards, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migrants (IOM), Safa Msehli, has tweeted. Msehli added that ”six boats were intercepted over the last 48 hours and 390 men, women and children ended up in jail”. ”Libya is not a safe port”, concluded Msehli.

IOM in Libya said that ”while our teams are present at landing points to provide emergency assistance, we reiterate that nobody should be repatriated to Libya”.

The IOM said a few days ago that 9,448 illegal migrants, including women and children, had so far been rescued and returned to Libya in 2020.

Tunisia to host Libyan political dialogue forum in November

The Acting Head of the UNSMIL, Stephanie Williams, discussed with the President of Tunisia Kais Saied Monday the ongoing preparation for the holding of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Tunisia, early November, which was welcomed by President Saied.

UNSMIL said in a statement that Williams briefed President Saied on ongoing preparation for the holding of the LPDF and related various consultations.

Williams also expressed her gratitude for Tunisia’s continuous support to the UN efforts to an inclusive political solution to ensure peace and stability in Libya and the region.

President Saied reiterated readiness of Tunisia to help Libyans achieve stability through the LPDF, adding that his country’s stance remains committed to unity of Libya and rejection of foreign interference, according to a statement by the Tunisian Presidency.

Saied also said the LPDF is part of Tunisia’s efforts to achieve a political solution in Libya as it gasps for peaceful settlement for the Libyan entanglement.

Tunisian president confirmed that his country is ready to put in place all the necessary material and human resources to contribute to the success of the Libyan dialogue sessions.

Williams said Saturday the LPDF will kick off on October 26 via visual meetings before the start of face-to-face meetings at the beginning of November.

Nuran Bank suspends its banking services

Libya’s Nuran Bank announced yesterday that it will suspend its banking services from October 13, until further notice for security reasons that have led to the inability of employees and officials to carry out their duties and carry out their work due to threats to some of those authorized to pass transactions suspended by the Attorney General. It said that the relevant authorities have been notified of the matter.

The bank appealed to all security authorities to assume their responsibilities to protect the bank as it is a public institution and to protect its workers.

Mass graves discovered in Tarhuna

The Libyan government on Monday said it had discovered two mass graves in the city of Tarhuna, 90 kilometers (56 miles) northeast of the capital Tripoli.

The General Authority for Research and Identification of Missing Persons said in a statement that “the first grave contains four corpses, where Authority’s teams are still working to exhume the bodies.”

The authority also said that after ending work on the first grave, “work will start on the second grave, which is expected to include a number of corpses.”

It added that since Haftar’s forces were driven from western Libya, atrocities they committed in areas once under his control are discovered on almost a daily basis.

According to Libyan official sources, Haftar’s forces and affiliated militia committed war crimes and acts of genocide in the period between April 2019 and June 2020.
