The US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, revealed his efforts to conduct negotiations between the Libyan Prime Minister designated from the House of Representatives, Fathi Bashagha and the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh to reach a political understanding.
After his meeting on Saturday in the Tunisian capital, the US ambassador confirmed the latter’s readiness to engage in urgent negotiations facilitated by the United Nations with the aim of reaching a political understanding with the Prime Minister of the National Unity Government on how to manage the final stages of this interim government period and prepare for elections. Parliamentary and presidential as soon as possible.
The ambassador Norland indicated that the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, is ready to participate in these talks, whose form and place will be determined by the interlocuting parties in consultation with the United Nations and international partners, stressing that the position of the United States of America in particular is clear and it respects the right of Libyans decide their own future.
The US ambassador urged the Libyan parties to reach a political solution through peaceful means only without resorting to violence, reiterating that free, fair and inclusive elections are the only formula for lasting stability, adding that « in the current situation, championing one party against another is not an option and the only position that can be chosen. The most justifiable is the peaceful negotiations. »
