Pottery, the inherited industry, and attempts to save it from vanishing

The sale of pottery, which represents a pride of the industry in the mountainous city of Gharyan, described as the “pottery capital” in northwestern Libya, has declined a lot. In an effort to salvage their generations-old craft, artisans are betting on internet service to boost revenues from the local pottery sale.

Some 80 kilometers south of Tripoli, there are dozens of shops selling pottery in Gharyan. With the abundance of supply and the lack of demand, Moayed Al-Shabani, 35 years old, launched the “Pottery at the Door of the House” project to deliver pottery to customers inside and outside Libya.

Hundreds of items of Libyan pottery are displayed in the shops, including colorful dishes and drinking water pots with their distinctive decorations and mosaics, as well as decorative pieces for the walls and pots for seedlings.
