LIA Confirms The End Of The Conflict Over Its Legitimacy

 The Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) claimed on Monday that the Supreme Court in Britain, the highest court in the United Kingdom, issued a final ruling concerning the legitimacy of the current board of directors of LIA and the recognition of Ali Mahmoud Hassan as its legal Director, after rejecting an application for leave to appeal against the Appeal Court’s judgement.

Commenting on the ruling, Chairman of the Board of Directors Ali Mahmoud said: “the end of the legitimacy issue as well as its administrative and legal repercussions will bring greater opportunities to advance in the accomplishment of transformation and governance projects.

It will be reminded that LIA reaffirmed it would continue on with its strategy to protect its assets, the independence of its legal personality, and interests away from the Libyan government, confirming its full commitment to the sanctions imposed by the Security Council.

Mayor of Zawiya Municipality discusses cooperation projects with Turkish delegation

The Mayor of Zawiya Municipality, Jamal Bahr, held a meeting with a delegation from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency in order to discuss the sustainable development and ways to cooperate between the municipality and the Agency.

The meeting addressed the possibility of signing agreements in order to sustain the economic revival and institutional development.

The meeting also dealt with the possibility of enabling the municipality’s youth to benefit from Turkish scholarships at various academic levels.

Libyan Airlines lost 272 million dinars due to continuous bombing of Mitiga Airport

The Libyan Airlines announced that the total losses of the company as a result of the frequent bombing of Mitiga International Airport amounted to about 272 million dinars.

According to the Libyan Airlines, the biggest damage was done to two airplanes, one of which is now out of service

Latest update of COVID-19 infections in Libya

The National Center for Disease Control analyzed on Sunday, June 21, 704 blood samples. The center confirmed that 677 samples have tested negative for Covid-19, while 27 others tested positive.

The center confirmed that 5 patients have recovered from the disease.

It also released the latest update of the coronavirus infections in the country as following:

Deaths: 10

Recovery: 103

Isolation: 458

Total infections: 571

Al-Sarraj to meet the American Ambassador and the head of AFRICOM

The President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord, Fayez Al-Sarraj, the Minister of Interior, Fathi Bashaga, and the commander of the Western Military Region Major General Osama Al-Gwili, will hold a closed meeting today, Monday, with the American Ambassador, Richard Norland and the head of US Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM), General “Stephen Townsend”.

About $6 billion recorded in losses due to the closure of ports and oil fields

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) said on Sunday that the total loss, due to closure of ports and oil fields, is in the region of $6 billion, after 157 days of forced closures.

This came in a brief statement published by the NOC’s official website, without any additional information.

Libya’s National Oil Corporation declared force majeure since January 17.

Libya to shun Arab League emergency meeting

Representatives of the Libyan government will not attend a meeting on Libya organized by the Arab League as it violates the organization’s bylaws, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson said Monday.

Mohammed Al-Qablawi said the Libyan government has reviewed the Arab League’s decision taken during its extraordinary session at Cairo’s request and refuses to attend.

The Secretariat General of the Arab League announced last Friday that Egypt had requested an extraordinary meeting to discuss the latest developments in Libya.

13 gold bars and nearly €600 thousand on board Libyan registered car, seized in Tunisia

 A patrol of the customs guard of Skhira, seized on Saturday evening, 13 gold bars weighing 28.8 KG and nearly €600 thousand (about 1.7 million dinars) from a car registered in Libya.

The car was intercepted at the level of an agricultural path in the region of Sbiha of the delegation of Mida in the governorate of Sfax, following an ambush by customs officers.

Customs officials were informed that a Libyan car, coming from Gafsa, was transporting smuggled goods to south-east Tunisia.

At 10 p.m., the suspicious car was detected but the driver fled when a customs officer signalled him to stop. The customs officers chased him until they found the car abandoned by the driver.

A search of the vehicle revealed a cache under the spare wheel in the back trunk, where they found currency and 24-karat bars worth nearly 4.7 million dinars.

The investigation revealed that the number plate of the vehicle is false and undeclared.

UNHCR launches program to feed migrants in Libya

The UNHCR announced a joint initiative with the World Food Programme (WFP) to save up to 10,000 refugees and migrants stuck in Libya from malnourishment and starvation. The program comes amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

The UN refugee agency said that the first distribution of food began in the Sarraj neighborhood of Tripoli on June 15.

“The partnership was launched in recognition of the severe socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Libya as well as the effects of the ongoing conflict,” UNHCR and WFP said in a statement. “Many refugees say that they are only able to afford to eat one meal a day.”

The UN agencies said that most migrants in Libya “have been unable to find any daily work to support themselves as curfews have been introduced and food prices and the cost of basic goods have dramatically risen.”

IOM: A shipwreck off the coast of Tripoli

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Saturday that a boat carrying illegal immigrants broke off the Libyan coast.

“Shipwreck off the coast of Tripoli, Libya this morning. IOM staff are following up and are informed that survivors were taken to an unofficial detention center,” the IOM tweeted.

“There is still no information about the number of lives lost in this tragedy,” it added.
