Foreign Forces Mobilise at Sirte

Arab foreign ministers said on Tuesday they wanted to head off a new battle in Libya, where the warring sides are mobilising near the main oil region as their foreign backers threaten an escalation.

According to New York Times, any further advance by the GNA would give it the chance to take back control over Libya’s “oil crescent”, the region where most of the OPEC member’s energy is produced and exported.

OIL PRICE: Who Will Win The Ultimate War For Libya’s Oil?

Now, the battle for Libya’s oil is focusing on Sirte, the gateway to Libya’s massive oil facilities, Oil Prices stated.

Sirte is on the coast, and it is largely the gateway to the country’s massive oil facilities. All the external forces in this battle are lining up now, around Sirte.

It was also off the coast of Sirte last week that the French attempted to uphold an arms embargo, Oil Price added.

This strategic gem along Libya’s coast is the entry point for the “oil crescent” and it’s also the only point from which you can control the route to the key ports: Sidra, Ras Lanuf, Masra al-Brega, and Zuwetina

Sirte is the strategic key to this conflict at the moment. Now, the game is to control the gateway to all of Libya’s oil facilities, including its key export terminals.

A reliable source asserted to Sada Economic Newspaper that the Libyan Prime Minister Abdallah al-Theni sent a correspondence to ministers, and a number of public entities to stop dealing with the Military Investment Authority and suspend all previous or planned projects for failing to adhere to current legislation.

During his correspondence, al-Theni exposed the illegal seizure of state land and property by the Military Investment Authority.

Al-Theni also revealed that the Military Investment Authority had illegally seized assets of agricultural and investment projects in Libya.

In this regard, Abdallah al-Theni stressed that filing suit against the Military Investment Authority is a must in case it had trespassed on any party’s property.

The Libyan government on Monday published two documents implicating Khalifa Haftar in corruption.

The government earlier revealed that Haftar’s Military Investment Authority had signed an agreement with the Union of Italian Fishing in March 2019 under which Italian fishing boats were allowed to fish in Libya’s territorial waters in return for 10.000 euros ($11,100) a month for 5 years.

US delegation draws a ceasefire line beyond Sirte

Following the meeting in Zuwara, western Libya, between Libyan and US delegations, the US Embassy in Libya issued a statement that suggested that Washington had drawn a ceasefire line that went beyond Sirte and the oil ports, all the way to the Jafra area.

The American delegation to the Zuwara meeting was led by US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, and Commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Stephen Townsend, while the Libyan delegation was composed of the head of the Government of National Accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, Interior Minister, Fathi Bashagha, and a number of military leaders.

In the current context of escalating foreign intervention in Libya, the meeting focused on the current opportunities for “a strategic pause in military operations by all parties to the conflict,” said a statement released by the US embassy,

According to the statement, General Townsend presented his military perspective on the risk of escalation, the dangers posed by Russia’s support to Wagner operations, and the strategic importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Mediterranean.

“US Africa Command provided the security that enabled this important Department of State engagement with Prime Minister Sarraj. We emphasised to the Libyan delegation that all sides need to return to UN-led ceasefire and political negotiations because this tragic conflict is robbing all Libyans of their future,” General Townsend said.

For his part, Ambassador Norland said that “the current violence fuels the potential resurgence of ISIS and Al Qaeda in Libya, is further dividing the country for the benefit of foreign actors, and prolongs human suffering. External actors should stop fueling the conflict, respect the UN arms embargo, and uphold commitments made at the Berlin Summit.”
