Resumption of flights between Mitiga and Benina airports after 18 months of suspension

At 10:30 pm Libya time Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A320 5A-ONL flight 8U214 landed at Benina airport in Benghazi coming from Mitiga airport in Tripoli.

It is considered the first flight between the two airports for more than a year. The airline stated that it will conduct two flights per week.

Libya: coronavirus cases reach 47,845

1169 new cases of Coronavirus were registered in Libya, according to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

The NCDC announced in a statement on its official Facebook page that 377 new recoveries had been registered, in addition to 18 deaths due to COVID-19.

This brings the total number of the pandemic cases in Libya to 47,845, including 21,084 active cases, 26,062 recoveries, and 699 deaths.

EU sanctions Russian businessman Evgeny Prigozhin over support for mercenaries in Libya

The European Union (EU) has imposed sanctions on the Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The EU said in a statement on Thursday that Prigozhin participated in supporting Wagner’s activities in Libya, which threaten not only the country’s peace, stability and security, but also that of the entire region.

The EU noted that the sanctions were to include travel bans and the freezing of assets, saying that the Russian group had, on several occasions, violated the Security Council Resolution issued in 2011 regarding the embargo on arms supplies to Libya, including the delivery of weapons, along with the deployment of mercenaries in Libya in support of Haftar’s forces.

The Administrative Control Authority transmits 117 case files to the Attorney General

A reliable source at the Administrative Control Authority told Sada economic newspaper that 117 case files of investigation about corruption cases have been transmitted by the Head of east-based Administrative Control Authority, Abdelsalam Al-Hassi, to the Attorney General’s office.

According to the source, the 117 files include the involvement in corruption cases related to abuse of power, l  embezzlement of public funds, and other criminal cases.

Siala calls for a reduction in the AU budget due to Coronavirus

During his speech in closed circles at the meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Accord, Mohamed Siala, called for reducing the contribution of member states to the African Union budget for next year, so that the 2021 budget would be austerity due to the exceptional economic conditions of African countries suffering from Covid-19 pandemic.

Siala stressed the importance of the role of regional mechanisms in bringing peace and stability in the region, as they fall within the efforts of the African Union and the regional economic groups, in addition to the need to apply quotas in the distribution of jobs among the countries of the Union.

OPEC+ panel discuss weaker oil demand outlook, Libya supply rise

An OPEC+ technical committee discussed on Thursday higher oil supply as production resumes in Libya amid a weaker demand outlook in the coming months driven by a second wave of the new coronavirus, two OPEC+ sources said.

The Joint Technical Committee (JTC), which includes representatives from key OPEC+ producers such as Saudi Arabia and Russia, was meeting to review compliance with global oil output cuts and to review the oil market.

The NOC welcomes the arrest of “Al Bidja”

The National Oil Corporation has welcomed the arrest of Abdul Rahman Al Milad, known as ‘Al Bidja’.

The NOC has also called for the arrest of all those criminally wanted in cases of fuel smuggling and disruption of oil installations.

IT will be reminded that Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) has detained Abdalrahman al-Milad, a coastguard commander sanctioned by the United Nations for alleged human trafficking and migrant smuggling, its interior ministry said on Wednesday.

UNSMIL welcomes the appointment of women judges in Benghazi and Tripoli

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the appointment of five women judges who will work in two new specialized courts in Benghazi and Tripoli dedicated to hearing cases of violence against women and children.

UNSMIL said in a statement that the establishment of these two courts, coupled with the appointment of five women judges, represents a significant step towards advancing the rights of women and children in Libya.

“With dedicated courts, the criminal justice response to cases of violence against women and children will vastly improve.” UNSMIL added.

Libya: Benina Airport will not resume flights

On Wednesday, the General Manager of Benghazi’s Benina airport, Abdalla Al-Shafee denied widely circulated reports that the airport will commence flights with Tripoli on Friday.

Al-Shafee said the Anti-Coronavirus Committee had set 17 preconditions that needed to be met before the airport can resume operations.

He said there is a list of issues that need to be resolved, headed by the need for a specialized disinfection company that can disinfect the airport, passengers, and baggage – before operations can resume.
