{"id":33365,"date":"2021-04-16T11:59:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T11:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tabadul.demo.ly\/en\/ira-victims-claim-a-share-of-libyan-frozen-assets-as-compensation\/"},"modified":"2021-04-16T11:59:10","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T11:59:10","slug":"ira-victims-claim-a-share-of-libyan-frozen-assets-as-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tabadul.tv\/en\/ira-victims-claim-a-share-of-libyan-frozen-assets-as-compensation\/","title":{"rendered":"IRA victims claim a share of Libyan frozen assets as compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A victims&#8217; campaigner has claimed to MPs that a secret deal between the UK and Libya blocked a compensation package for IRA attacks during the Troubles, according to the BBC news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kenny Donaldson said he spoke to a senior Libyan bank official who is &#8220;vociferous&#8221; that the matter is closed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He said he was told &#8220;a diplomatic outcome&#8221; was reached years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;There is a reason why compensation is not being pursued,&#8221; he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Campaigner Jonathan Ganesh said: &#8220;Our government has disgraced victims. They fought for trade deals more than they fought for victims.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DUP MP Gregory Campbell, a member of the committee, said the government had &#8220;behaved exceptionally badly&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He added: &#8220;The current position is untenable and unjustifiable and they need to hear that message.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Last month the government said it was unable in law to use \u00a312bn of Libyan assets frozen in the UK to make payments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Campaigners said, however, freeing those assets should be conditional on a compensation package for bereaved families and victims.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The government is also using \u00a35m a year in tax revenue from the assets for other things.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It has told victims to pursue Libya themselves and to apply for payments from the new Troubles pension scheme.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A victims&#8217; campaigner has claimed to MPs that a secret deal between the UK and Libya blocked a compensation package for IRA attacks during the Troubles, according to the BBC news.
