{"id":31959,"date":"2020-05-12T17:40:34","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T17:40:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tabadul.demo.ly\/en\/guterres-austerity-measures-deepened-the-suffering-of-the-libyan-people\/"},"modified":"2020-05-12T17:40:34","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T17:40:34","slug":"guterres-austerity-measures-deepened-the-suffering-of-the-libyan-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tabadul.tv\/en\/guterres-austerity-measures-deepened-the-suffering-of-the-libyan-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Guterres: Austerity measures deepened the suffering of the Libyan people"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> In his report on Libya to the Security Council yesterday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres\u00a0said although prevention and preparedness measures taken with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic were introduced by authorities with the support of the United Nations, <strong>Libya remained at an extremely high risk.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation was compounded by increasing levels of fighting and insecurity, political fragmentation and a weak and overstretched health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The pandemic led to<strong> a loss of income<\/strong> for segments of society,<strong> food shortages <\/strong>and an<strong> increase in the price of basic commodities<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, measures to restrict the spread of COVID-19 hampered access to humanitarian aid and the movement of medical and humanitarian personnel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ongoing conflict and the current pandemic further weakened the already tenuous economic situation in Libya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Libyan National Army-supported blockage of oil exports <strong>prompted the Government of National Accord to take austerity measures to reduce spending, including payroll reductions.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The austerity measures will further exhaust coping mechanisms at a time when the population is facing tremendous additional economic pressures owing to COVID-19.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his report on Libya to the Security Council yesterday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres\u00a0said although prevention and preparedness measures taken with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic were introduced by authorities with the support of the United Nations, Libya remained at an extremely high risk.
